Do You Need a Skin Cleanse? with S.W. Basics

SW Basics 2

Eating as clean as you possibly can is so important to health and wellness.  Food has a much bigger impact on our bodies then many people give it credit for these days.  I am always happy to see more people coming to this realization and taking a stand against processed junk food.  Not only has it been proven that a clean diet can be beneficial but the results can also be measured based on your own positive experiences.  I have seen people cure or improve diseases, lose weight, and improve their skin just based on healthy diet changes.  If you are experiencing symptoms such as acne, eczema, or rashes (just to name a few) it is likely your body trying to tell you something.  Problems such as these usually mean that there is something going on on the inside that needs to be corrected (and I am not just talking about taking a pill).

But lets just say for a minute that you are eating the best that you can and that your diet is mostly clean but you are still having some problems with your skin.  What could possibly be going on?  Maybe you need a skin cleanse!  I came across this book on instagram that someone was reading (yay for social media) and I immediately knew that I had to read it.  Skin Cleanse: The Simple, All-Natural Program for Clean, Calm, Happy Skin by Adina Grigore.

This book was written by the founder of S.W. Basics of Brooklyn.  If you have never heard of S.W. Basics then I am so happy to be the one to introduce you to these products!  Adina has had sensitive skin her whole life and one of the results of her spending countless years trying to figure out how to cure what ailed her was studying holistic health and nutrition.  After prescription medications were making her skin worse she quit products cold turkey and overnight her skin was better.  What do you know the less products she used on her skin the better it got?!  Adina started experimenting making her own beauty products using basics ingredients that can be found in most kitchens.  Those products did not affect her skin negatively and she knew she had something great.  S.W. Basics of Brooklyn was born.  Adina says, “my ultimate goal is to get everyone to think of mainstream skin-care products like they think of packaged food: full of preservatives, unnecessary ingredients, and nasty chemicals.”  You go Adina!!!

Now in addition to running an organic skin care company, Adina also works with clients to help them improve their skin.  One of my favorite parts of what Adina does is that she doesn’t just look at diet or skin care products…she looks at the whole picture.  Getting to the ROOT CAUSE of why your skin doesn’t look as good as you want it to look.  This is so key!  In the book she explains exactly how to do a skin cleanse, how to examine your diet to see if certain things you are eating may be a culprit (things like sugar, gluten, and dairy are big problems for some).  Also how to void your skin care products of toxic chemicals that could be doing more harm than good (and not to mention wasting your money by promising better skin).

SW Basics

I know how are it can be to hate your skin.  I too have dealt with acne prone skin ever since puberty hit.  For years and years I tried countless products, spent countless dollars, and nothing was helping.  My diet has greatly improved over the last few years ever since switching to a real, whole food diet but I still wasn’t 100% happy with my skin.  A couple years ago I was experiencing some unexplained patches of eczema (which I never had before in my life).  When I went to the doctor all they wanted to do was prescribe me with lotions and creams.  The doctor didn’t even ask me what I was eating.  My skin needed a cleanse for sure…from the inside out.

I reached out to the lovely people at S.W. Basics of Brooklyn to tell them how much I loved the book and they offered to send me a few products to try out.  Of course I said yes.  I ditched my old skin care regimen and started adopting a new one that includes only natural ingredients.  The goal is to have as few products contact my skin as possible.  I particularly love the Cleanser which only has 3 ingredients,  organic rosewater, organic vegetable glycerin, and organic tea tree oil.  It makes my skin feel so fresh and clean without the need for a sudsy soap that usually would leave my skin feeling dry.

Good skin can’t be bought in a designer product or prescription.  We have to feed our skin and take care of it in a kind, gentle way in order for it to love us back.  If we treat our skin issues with junk then it will show.  Skin issues can be caused by so many different things but I think that doing a skin cleanse is a great place to start.  I encourage anyone who is struggling with any kind of skin care issue to try out the skin cleanse and report back with your results.  I’d love to hear from you!
