Home Remedies for Acne: 3 Ingredient Face Mask

Have acne?  Need an easy home remedy that can help?  I have found a 3 ingredient face mask that just might be the answer.  I have has skin issues most of my life.  Pretty much since puberty hit I have been dealing with acne prone skin.  It really upsets me to think back and realize all of the things that the embarrassment I had from my skin kept me from doing.  The lack of confidence, not being able to look people in the eyes, and hiding every chance I got so people wouldn’t look at my skin.  I didn’t just experience face breakouts but it was on my back as well.  I remember trying to shop for a stylish homecoming dress, you try to find a dress that would cover your back (not easy to do let me tell you).  I tried every cream, potion, and lotion I could.  I tried birth control pills (and we all know how I feel about them now), chemical peels, changing my pillowcase every night, and microdermabrasion.  I don’t even want to know how much money I spent on all of these things that never even worked.

Green Clay Mask 2

One thing nobody ever talked with me about, even when I went to see a dermatologist, was what my diet was like or how my digestive system was functioning.  It was only until I became a real food dietitian that I saw the connect and took matters into my own hands.  I stopped loading my diet with processed sugar and carbohydrates, got off the pill, started working on improving my digestion, and supported my hormones with a healthy diet and lifestyle.  My skin has been through a lot but I am happy to say that it is looking better then it has in years!

**I must point out that not just this mask helped my skin but taking care of my health as a whole has been the key for me.  Acne is usually a sign of something going awry on the inside so everything must be addressed to heal your skin.

I try to use minimal products on my skin and when I do they are as natural as possible.  After experimenting with numerous different face mask recipes I found a combination that I really love to use on my skin.  I have found that it really helps keep my pores clean and my skin feels nice and soft after I use this mask.  I don’t recommend applying it right before leaving the house as it can cause your skin to be pink for about an hour after removing it but your skin will return to normal.  Its toning action stimulates the skin by bringing fresh blood to skin cells which is what causes the redness.  All you need is 3 simple ingredients to make this mask right at home.

Green Clay Mask 3

French Green Clay

Clay draws out toxins, dust, dead skin cells, and other impurities commonly found on the skin. It can also contain a large amount of nourishing minerals which can vary widely depending on where the clay was located. The detoxification properties also help to reduce and eliminate free radicals from the skin. Free radicals are unstable atoms that we are exposed to when we come into contact with toxic substances like smoke, UV rays, and pollution. They can damage cells, and are thought to accelerate aging.  By using this clay we can help remove impurities on our skin and stay looking younger…win win!

Tea Tree Oil

This essential oil has unique disinfecting, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and soothing properties.  Unlike other conventional acne treatments, tea tree oil will not strip your skin of its natural oils which can cause further damage (3).  It is important to look for 100% pure essential oils.  Ideally look for oil that is therapeutic grade and organic, which ensures it’s been tested and meets all criteria, plus it will be free from chemical toxins, fillers or solvents.

Kombucha

Not just for drinking…it is a fermented tea full of beneficial bacteria known mostly to help the gut micro biome.  But guess what?  We have bacteria on our skin too.  Our skin is a rich environment for microbes.  Most of this bacteria is harmless and some is even beneficial but when there is disruption of a good balance it can result in skin disorders or infections (1).  While acnes’ root cause is normally inflammation and not necessarily bad bacteria found on the skin research found a strand of bacteria in healthy, clear skin that wasn’t seen in acne skin. (2)  Bacteria may play a role in that pimple.

I apply this mask 1-2 times per week as my skin needs.  When it goes on it feels so cooling on my skin which I love.  As the mask dries on your skin it pulls oil and dirt from your pores which can contribute to acne.  It hasn’t been just great for my skin but I also use it as a way to unwind from a busy day.  Draw a bath, put on some soft music, light a candle, and let the mask do its magic.  Nothing could be better as part of a healthy lifestyle then taking time each and every day to relax!
